Custom Synthetic Turf Putting Green

Katy, Texas

From Bocce Court to Backyard Putting Green

After completing several previous improvements for this Katy homeowner, we returned to reimagine an underused backyard bocce court. The goal was to transform the compact space into a custom synthetic turf putting green that would provide more enjoyment while fitting naturally into the existing landscape.

Working within the available footprint, we designed a multi-hole green with varied contours, breaks and approach angles to create a surprising amount of putting challenge in a relatively small space.

Built for the Way It Plays

A successful putting green starts well below the turf. After excavation and filter fabric, approximately four inches of washed limestone created a stable, compacted base. Decomposed granite was then carefully shaped and compacted to form the contours, slopes and subtle breaks that give the finished green its character.

Before final cutting and seaming, the putting turf was laid over the shaped surface so we could test how the contours played. Golf balls—and even a larger ball that made subtle breaks easier to see—helped us evaluate the surface and make final adjustments before committing to the finished layout.

The putting cups were incorporated into the design and securely set with drainage beneath them, while a taller synthetic fringe was carefully fitted and seamed around the putting surface. The perimeter was secured where needed, and the finished green was brushed with infill to create a firm, consistent playing surface.

Rebuilding from the Ground Up

The best outdoor spaces should reflect how a homeowner actually wants to use them. By replacing an underused bocce court with a custom putting green, we gave this compact area an entirely new purpose without requiring additional space in the backyard. Thoughtful shaping, careful installation and multiple putting angles turned a relatively small footprint into a challenging and enjoyable place to practice—and a feature designed to be used for years to come.
